Clean hydrogen plays a key role in the race to decarbonise numerous sectors of our economy. As the core piece of the European Green Deal, renewable hydrogen will contribute considerably to the green energy transition.
To match the unprecedented interest in hydrogen and fuel cells technologies, and mark the adoption of the EU Hydrogen Strategy in July, we are pleased to announce the first edition of the European Hydrogen Week. This entire week of events from 23 to 27 November 2020 will be dedicated to the essential role of hydrogen in reaching EU’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Highlights will include the European Hydrogen Forum, a policy conference under the German Presidency and the FCH JU Awards, as well as matchmaking activities and virtual cocktails for participants.
The highlight of the week will be the European Hydrogen Forum marking the launch of the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance on 8 July this year. The Forum is jointly organised by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW) and the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), in partnership with Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe Research.
Open to all stakeholders, the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance aims at an ambitious deployment of hydrogen technologies by 2030, bringing together renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production, demand in industry, mobility and other sectors, and hydrogen transmission and distribution.
Why attend the European Hydrogen Forum
The European Hydrogen Forum is a unique event bringing together industry, policy-makers, government representatives as well as the research community to steer the potential for green hydrogen technologies and discuss latest developments.
Under the theme “Kick-starting the EU hydrogen industry to achieve the EU climate goals”, the Forum will feature a series of panel discussions, smart talks, matchmaking activities and virtual cocktails on the deployment of clean hydrogen, synergies among EU funding and financing instruments, and the creation of impact through dedicated research projects.
Executive Director FCH JU
Bart Biebuyck is since 16th May 2016 the Executive Director of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), a public-private partnership aiming at facilitating the deployment of fuel cells and hydrogen technologies in Europe. Under his leadership,a strong emphasis on cooperation with cities and regions led to the creation of the European Hydrogen Valleys partnership with around 40 European regions. Dissemination of project results, building technology awareness and enhanced basic research became his key focusing points.
Before the FCH JU, Bart Biebuyck was at the Fuel Cell department of Toyota Motor Europe where he held the position of Technical Senior Manager. His expertise in the automotive industry includes extensive knowledge related to the deployment of new technologies in the European market. It is as part of the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) program in Berlin that Bart worked at reinforcing European trials for the Toyota Fuel Cell Vehicle. He also had the opportunity to develop and expand his expertise in Japan, where for two years he worked on the development of Toyota and PSA’s small vehicle. In addition to his industrial experience, Bart has been politically active in his local town since 2006. In 2013 he became the vice president of the City Council, responsible, among others, for the local economy and education.
Bart’s term as the Executive Director of the FCH - JU was extended for four years until 15 May 2023.
Executive Vice-President of the European Commission
Frans Timmermans began his career with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1987. After taking part in the junior diplomat training programme, he worked at the European Integration Department of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Moscow. He later worked for Hans van den Broek, European Commissioner for External Relations, and Max van der Stoel, High Commissioner on National Minorities for the OSCE.
In 1998, Frans Timmermans was elected as a member of the House of Representatives for the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA), where he dealt principally with foreign affairs. In the fourth Balkenende government, from February 2007 to February 2010, Mr Timmermans was Minister for European Affairs. In 2010, Mr Timmermans returned to Parliament as the Labour Party's spokesperson on foreign policy.
On 5 November 2012, Mr Timmermans became Minister of Foreign Affairs in the second Rutte government. Two years later, on 1 November 2014, he became First Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for better regulation, interinstitutional relations, sustainable development, the rule of law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights. Since 1 December 2019, he is the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for the Green Deal.
European Commissioner for Internal Market
An engineer by training with a degree from Supélec in computer science, Thierry Breton begins his career as an entrepreneur in the new technologies sector. In 1981, he sets up in the United States Forma Systems, an SME he heads for 5 years. At the same time, he publishes a number of science-fiction novels, including Softwar, sold at 2 million copies and translated into a dozen languages.
In France, he designs and then heads the Futuroscope, the first science and technology tourism park, between 1986 and 1990. In parallel, he is elected as regional councillor and then Vice-President of Poitou-Charentes from 1986 to 1992.
He runs a number of companies in the market for goods, as well as in the IT sector and new technologies. He is the Director of Strategy and Development, then Managing Director of Bull between 1993 and 1997. He then takes the head of Thomson Multimedia, a global electronics company. In 2002, he is appointed CEO of the multinational operator France Télécom.
In 2005, he becomes France's Minister for Economic Affairs, Finance and Industry, a position he holds until 2007.
Following his ministerial office, he teaches Governance at the Harvard Business School.
In 2009, he becomes CEO of Atos, a technology and digital services company, until 2019.
He chairs ANRT, France’s National Association for Research and Technology, until 2019. He is a member of the Technology Academy.
In 2019, he becomes European Commissioner for the Internal Market. He is in charge of industry, services, digital, defence and space, as well as tourism and audiovisual.
European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, Youth and Sport
Under her leadership, the new Horizon Europe, Erasmus+, and the cultural strand of Creative Europe programmes (2021-2027) will be defined and implemented. Her main priorities are excellence in research, innovation and education (ERA, EEA, EIA); tackling the R&I divide in Europe; Europe as a leader in strategic innovation areas through the digital and green transition, with a particular attention to young people and regions. “No one left behind” and “Think out of the box” are her mottos.
Between 2017 and 2019, Mariya Gabriel was European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society. She proposed the new Digital Europe programme, worked on EU Strategy on AI, disinformation online, cybersecurity and launched the EuroHPC strategy. She has extensively engaged with external EU partners to enhance digital cooperation, in particular with the Western Balkans and Africa.
She was elected Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in 2009, 2014 and 2019. Mariya Gabriel is First Vice-President of the European People's Party (EPP), and since 2012 Vice-President of EPP Women.
Commissioner Gabriel is board member of the United Nations youth programme Generation Unlimited (GenU). She has been ranked among the 50 most influential women in Europe in the field of cybersecurity by the leading European cybersecurity magazine SC Media UK (2019). Mariya Gabriel is also known for her involvement in the fight for gender equality. Amongst others, she received the prestigious Italian prize “Golden Apple” for highest achievements for women. At the European Parliament, she was awarded twice the "MEP of the year" - in 2016 in the Development category, and in 2013 in the Gender equality category.
She holds a Master's degree in political sciences and international relations from the Institute of Political Studies (Bordeaux, FR) and a Bachelor’s degree in Bulgarian and French Languages from “Paisii Hilendarski” University (Plovdiv, BG). She also graduated from “Dr.Petar Beron” Language High School (Kyustendil, BG).
European Commissioner for Energy
Kadri Simson is an Estonian politician from the Centre Party. She is serving as a European Commissioner for Energy in the Von der Leyen Commission since 1. December 2019.
She was previously the Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure in Jüri Ratas' first cabinet from 2016 to 2019. During the Estonian Presidency in the Council of the EU, Simson chaired both energy ministers and transport ministers meetings in TTE Council and ministers of economy format in EU Competitiveness Council.
From 2007–2016 Kadri Simson was a member of the 11th, 12th, and 13th Riigikogu and in 2019 she was also elected to the 14th Riigikogu. She holds a Master's degree in Political Science from University College London.
European Commissioner for Transport
Adina V?lean is the European Commissioner for Transport. Before taking office on December 1st 2019, she was a Member of the European Parliament for 12 years. As an MEP she served as the Chairwoman of ITRE Committee (July-December 2019), Chairwoman of ENVI Committee (2017-2019) and as Vice-President of the European Parliament (2014-2017). She was also a Member of the Romanian Parliament between 2004-2007. Adina V?lean holds a Master degree in European Integration Studies and Security and a bachelor degree in Mathematics.
German Federal Minister Transport and Digital Infrastructure
Andreas Scheuer is the German Federal Minister for Transport and Digital Infrastructure since March 2018.
From 2009 to 2013, he worked as a Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Development; he was then also the Federal Government Coordinator for Freight Transport and Logistics. Andreas Scheuer worked as an assistant to Minister-President of Bavaria Edmund Stoiber from 1998 to 1999. He is a Member of the German Parliament (Bundestag) since 2002. M. Scheuer joined the Christian Socialist Union party (CSU) in 1994, for which he occupied various leading positions, especially that of Secretary General from 2013 to 2018.
As to training, M. Scheuer passed his first State Examination (qualified to teach at intermediate schools); then followed studies in political science, economics and sociology at Passau University, graduating with the degree of Magister Artium in 2001. In 2004 he obtained a doctorate from the Charles University in Prague.

It is in Bertrand Piccard’s DNA to go beyond the obvious and achieve the impossible. Mr. Aziz RABBAH, the former Minister of Equipment, Transport and Logistics since January 2012 and the former Minister of Energy, Mines and Sustainable Development since April 2017, was appointed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, May God Assist Him, as Minister of Energy, Mines and Environment on October 09 2019.
M. Aziz Rabbah is an engineer, specialized in new information technologies. He holds a Bachelor in Mathematics from the Mohammed V high school in Kenitra (1981), an engineering degree from INSEA (1985) and a Masters degree in Software Engineering from Laval University in Quebec (1992).
M. Rabbah held several leadership positions in the Ministries of Economic and General Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Trade and Industry. He also served as an adviser in the offices of several Moroccan Ministers.
Mr. Rabbah was elected Mayor of Kenitra city in 2009 and was re-elected in 2015. He was elected member of the Moroccan parliament in 2007, 2011 and 2016.
M. Aziz Rabbah participated in several meetings concerning information technologies and communication, administrative reform, e-government, the upgrade of economy and the information society.
He is Research and Expertise Center (CEREX) Executive Committee and founding member and a founding member of the Sigma21 association. Dr Klaus Bonhoff studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University and at the ENSTA in Paris (France). After being awarded a doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) at RWTH Aachen University, he worked at the Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (Jülich Research Centre), at Ballard Power Systems GmbH and at DaimlerChrysler AG. He was managing director of NOW GmbH (National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology) before being appointed Director-General for Policy Issues at the Federal Ministry of Transport und Digital Infrastructure in August 2019. Dr Bonhoff is also an adjunct professor at Hamburg University of Technology and a member of various advisory boards.

Jean-Eric Paquet became Director-General of DG Research and Innovation on 1st April 2018; however, his involvement in EU research policy dates back from 2002, as Deputy Head of Cabinet of Philippe Busquin, then Commissioner in charge of Research and Development. Jean-Eric’s career at the European Commission started in 1993. Since then he contributed in shaping EU policy in various fields and achieved major breakthroughs, notably in DG Transport, where he led the development of the Trans-European Transport Network Policy and was responsible for Europe’s transport infrastructure policy and investment strategies, the single European rail area, inland waterways and port policy.
He also gained considerable experience at international level: in DG Enlargement, his portfolio covered Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro and FYROM. He was also EU Ambassador in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania from 2004 to 2007.
In 2015, he was appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the European Commission, in charge of Better Regulation and Policy Coordination.
In all his endeavours, he puts co-creation and systemic change at the heart of the decision-making process, and strongly believes that citizens should be more involved in shaping public policy agendas.

She joined DG ENER from a position as Head of Cabinet of Competition Commissioner Vestager, which she held from 1 November 2014 until 31 July 2019.
Ditte Juul J?rgensen has 27 years of experience in the European Commission. Before being Head of Cabinet she was Director for WTO, Legal Affairs and Trade in Goods in the Commission’s Directorate-General for Trade, where she managed the EU policy and negotiations in the World Trade Organization, legal issues and the EU’s involvement in WTO dispute settlement as well as the EU policy on trade in goods.
Prior to her appointment to Director, she was Head of Unit for dispute settlement and legal issues and Acting Director. She has also been Head of Unit for Trade and Sustainable Development and Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary Issues, and responsible for EU bilateral trade relations.
Her previous experience includes a posting as Head of the Economic Section of the EU Delegation to the United Nations in New York, as well as work at the European Court of Justice and at the European Commission Directorate-General for Competition.

Mrs. Bouillon-Delporte holds a master degree in International management from Kedge Business school and an executive degree in International Management from ESSEC Paris.
In 2020 she was nominated in the 2020 Ranking of Women in Renewable Energies. Early 2019 she was selected by La Tribune as one of the 100 persons who are transforming France and won the Prize “transforming France 2019” in the mobility category. In 2017 she was one of the candidate selected to the WBCSD Leadership Women Award 2017.
Mrs. Bouillon-Delporte is also one of the founder of the automotive association WAVE (Women Automotive and Vehicles in Europe) whose mission is to attract more women into the automotive industry.

Henrik HOLOLEI is an economist by training and holds degrees from Tallinn Technical University and Aarhus University in Denmark.
He held various positions in the Estonian Government Office between 1995 and 2004. He was mainly responsible for coordinating the work for the Estonian accession to the European Union. In 2001-2002, he was Minister of Economy.
In 2004, he moved to the European Commission as Head of Cabinet of Vice President Siim Kallas until 2013, when he became Deputy Secretary General.

Patrick CHILD is Deputy Director General in DG Research and Innovation at the European Commission. He leads the policy for implementation, impact & sustainable investment strategies and is acting Director for the Clean Planet. This Directorate provides support to EU energy, transport, environmental, health, climate and industrial policies, promoting clean, reliable and secure energy production and use, safe and cleaner transport and urban systems as well as cleaner industry. As a member of the Board of DG R&I, he follows in particular research and innovation in climate action and clean energy and mobility technologies as well as the R&I dimension of the post-COVID recovery and resilience strategy. He is the Commission representative of Mission Innovation (24 countries and the European Commission working to reinvigorate and accelerate global clean energy innovation with the objective to make clean energy widely affordable) and in the International Group of Earth Observations (GEO).
Until April 2016, Patrick Child was Managing Director of the European External Service with responsibility for administration and finance, covering human resources policy, security and the budget. Before he took up this post in 2011, he was director in the External Relations Directorate General in the European Commission responsible for the management of the network of Commission delegations. He has previously served as head of cabinet for External Relations Commissioners Benita Ferrero-Waldner and before that Chris Patten from 1999-2004.
With a background in the UK Finance Ministry, he joined the European Commission in 1994, where he started in the Economic and Monetary affairs Directorate General before becoming Commission press spokesman for economic and monetary union from 1995-1999. Shiva Dustdar has over 25 years of experience in the financial industry working for large private and public institutions in New York, London and Luxembourg. Since joining EIB in 2003, she has worked in risk management, lending and investing in innovative companies and currently heads the Innovation Finance Advisory (IFA) Division in the EIB which she was tasked to set up in 2013. IFA has 2 units covering project advisory and thematic finance providing access to finance advice to public and private entities, performing market studies and developing new financial products to meet the financing needs across the innovation spectrum to support smart, green and healthy growth.
Shiva started her career in 1993 at J.P. Morgan Investment Banking in New York working in M&A, Project Finance and Emerging Markets before joining Fitch Rating Agency in 1999 to set up its European High Yield rating business.
Shiva holds a BA in Economics from Columbia University and an Executive MBA from London Business School (LBS). Shiva co-founded the European High Yield Association (EHYA), which is now part of the Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME) and was nominated to Top 50 Women in Credit by Credit Magazine in 2006. Slawomir Tokarski obtained PhD degree at the European University Institute in Florence in 1995. In 2004 he joined the Commission as a Cabinet member of the Commissioner responsible for the regional policy. In 2009 he was nominated Head of Unit dealing with economic policy and co-ordination of EU funding in DG MARE. In March 2012 he became a Head of Defence, Aeronautics and Maritime industries in DG Enterprise. Maive Rute joined the European Commission in 2005 to become Director for the Promotion of SMEs and Entrepreneurship in DG Enterprise and Industry.
She brought in her extensive management experience in the Estonian private and semi-public sector, notably five years as CEO of KredEx, the funding body for businesses, housing, innovation and export.
In the Commission, Ms Rute worked as Director for Biotechnologies and Agriculture Research and as Resource Director in DG Research and Innovation until 2016. Then she became Deputy Director-General, DG Joint Research Centre (JRC) covering energy, transport and climate research and JRC Sites development. Since 1 November 2020 she works as Deputy Director-General, DG Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (GROW).
Ms Rute graduated as an agricultural economist from the Estonian University of Life Sciences. She holds an MBA from the Danube University, Austria, and received an MA in international politics from CERIS, Brussels.

Dr. Sunita Satyapal is the Director for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office within the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and is responsible for $150 million per year in hydrogen and fuel cell R&D. She has two and a half decades of experience across industry, academia and government, including at United Technologies managing research and business development, and as a visiting professor. She is also the current Chair of the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy, a partnership among over 18 countries to accelerate progress in hydrogen. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University and did postdoctoral work in Applied and Engineering Physics at Cornell University.
She has numerous publications, including in Scientific American, 10 patents, and a number of recognitions including a Presidential Rank Award.

Laurent Antoni is Hydrogen and Fuels Cells Program Manager at CEA Liten (French Atomic and Alternative Energies Commission). He started his career as a senior scientist on material sciences at Mittal Group (Arcelor). In 2003, he joined the CEA, a Public Research Institute with a mandate to develop metallic bipolar plates for fuel cells. In 2005, he was nominated Head of the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Laboratory at the CEA and managed a team to intensify R&D activity on hydrogen and fuel cells and in 2013, he was nominated Division Manager with 180 permanent staff to develop battery and fuel cell technologies for transportations through an integrated approach from materials up to demonstrators using technological platforms to enhance technological transfer to industry. Dr. Laurent Antoni is since 2016 President of Hydrogen Europe Research, the European research association on hydrogen and fuel cells gathering more than 80 universities and research institutes, member of the Governing Board of the European Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH 2 JU).

Joseph is an accomplished commercial affairs and policy professional. His current focus is building industrial, government and research links in the hydrogen sector between Europe and Australia. This is designed to facilitate the investment, policy and industrial development required to deliver climate goals through the uptake of hydrogen and ammonia. Prior to working for the Office of the Agent General in London, he was a national policy manager for the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

This two-days event will kick-start the whole week and, following the tradition of the past 10 years, will provide an excellent visibility platform for more than 100 projects currently on-going under FCH JU. 40 selected projects will have the opportunity to present their progress, obtain feedback, exchange ideas and best practices on the latest technological developments in the sector. Throughout the entire event we will also make available for download scientific posters for all FCH JU funded projects.

Building the world’s largest hydrogen electrolyser

The 10 MW PEM electrolyser under construction will provide green hydrogen for a Shell refinery near Cologne, Germany, reducing the facility’s reliance on grey hydrogen (derived from natural gas). It is designed to produce up to 4 tonnes of hydrogen per day, paving the way for further scale-up, and offer the flexibility required to help balance the internal energy grids at industrial sites.
Hydrogen-empowered wind farms

What if a wind farm generates more electricity than the grid can absorb? Can we store the surplus – for example, to compensate for reduced output on less blustery days? Producing green hydrogen directly on-site can help to put excess renewable energy to good use. A demonstrator using a 2.5 MW PEM electrolyser will explore this approach in harsh environmental conditions at a remote wind farm in the Arctic Circle.
Oiling the wheels of hydrogen mobility

Instead of pure hydrogen, why not store and transport hydrogen bonded to the molecules of a suitable liquid? The proposed Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology produces an oil that is far easier to handle, facilitating storage of large amounts of hydrogen and distribution to refuelling stations, where the hydrogen is then extracted. This innovation could significantly reduce the costs associated with hydrogen logistics.

Boosting service availability, hydrogen purity and metering accuracy, refining the associated billing systems – a network of five refilling stations in the London area has benefited from innovation, as part of a broader drive to take hydrogen mobility another step ahead. Improvements include an app informing customers of availability, as well as a dedicated maintenance team standing by to minimise downtime.
Virtual reality for real-life aeronautical fuel cell systems

How will the new fuel cell system fit into an aircraft? A virtual reality tool will enable users to project systems under development into specific areas of a plane, helping to validate and improve designs. The tool, which is more specifically dedicated to emergency power units based on fuel cells, will also help to anticipate assembly sequences, optimise maintenance instructions and train operators.
Durable, mass-producible PEM stacks

Research aimed at developing a next-generation MW-size fuel cell power plant unit has produced a new type of PEM stack. Based on common materials, this stack is suitable for volume manufacturing and more durable than current models. While it was designed with large-scale fuel cell applications in mind, this robust technology also has potential for mobility applications.
High-speed production of membrane electrode assemblies

The edge-sealed catalyst-coated membranes used in electrolysers and fuel cells are assembled from individual layers, but this may be about to change. In future, these components could be produced through an additive manufacturing process by which the various materials would be deposited layer by layer, from the ground up. This innovation could significantly increase production rates, reduce waste and boost product quality.
Flexible automatic assembly of fuel cells and stacks

Large-scale production of affordable and reliable fuel cell systems is getting closer with the development of a machine for the automatic assembly of cells and stacks. The proposed machine, which is intended for use in the automotive industry, offers a high degree of flexibility with regard to cell dimensions and numbers. It is expected to bring a step change in terms of cycle time, manufacturing cost, yield and reliability.
Boosting energy efficiency with hydraulic cell compression

The first stages of hydrogen compression – for example, for use in refuelling stations – consume a lot of energy. New technology involving hydraulic cell compression boosts the pressure of the hydrogen output from the electrolyser stack to levels of up to 100 bar. This innovation obviates the initial compression steps, reduces costs and increases the overall energy efficiency of the system.
The power of FCH: a toolkit for schools

The FCHgo project has developed a variety of teaching materials introducing students aged 8 to 18 years to energy concepts, related sustainability challenges and the potential of FCH. This rich toolkit includes educational materials for different age groups, in several languages – with resources as varied as worksheets, teaching guides, presentations, videos and games, which were tested in 75 classrooms across 5 countries.

Hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft are not a distant dream: the first such planes could be in service in just 15 years. Three research projects funded by the FCH JU are fuelling the momentum, helping this innovation to earn its wings with work on flight-ready fuel cell systems and emergency power units for flight controls, linked hydraulics and critical instrumentation.
From waste to wheel: a circular solution for hydrogen as a clean fuel
Projects: H2ME 2, JIVE, REVIVE
Trials using excess electricity generated from municipal waste to produce hydrogen for buses and other fuel cell vehicles, such as rubbish trucks, are under way in several towns and cities across Europe. FCH JU projects are initiating the deployment of local ‘waste-to-wheel’ solutions that support the transition to green and circular economies.
Cleaner air Everywh2ere, with hydrogen power

Need a mobile power source for an event or at a building site – or as a means of powering off-grid infrastructure? Fuel-cell generators could replace the diesel generators frequently used for portable generation. Research backed by the FCH JU is paving the way to their deployment, for cleaner, quieter cities and events and sustainable low-carbon energy in remote areas.
Advanced tools for better-performing stationary fuel-cell systems
Projects: D-CODE, DESIGN, DIAMOND, GENIUS, HEALTH-CODE, INSIGHT, RUBY
The rapid detection of faults is a sure-fire way to boost the reliability of stationary fuel-cell systems, facilitate their maintenance and reduce the associated costs. A series of FCH-funded projects have developed new IT-based tools that monitor the health of fuel-cell stacks to help prevent problems at an early stage, thereby making the case for clean, on-site power generation even more compelling.
Low-maintenance fuel-cell systems for work and home
Easier, less costly maintenance for fuel cell-based micro-combined heat and power (μCHP) systems and back-up fuel cell systems is the focus of this project funded by the FCH JU. Design and service innovations are delivered to make these low-emission technologies more affordable for homeowners and businesses. Key outcomes include simplified components, unit layouts and service manuals, along with remote monitoring solutions.
Reliable green power for off-grid communities
Wind and sunshine, for all their merits as sources of renewable energy, are variable natural resources – they cannot provide a stable and continuous supply directly. In remote locations, using them to power autonomous electrolyser systems could help to reduce the reliance on the diesel generators that are widely used as back-ups. Research backed by the FCH JU has produced an innovative prototype.
Gathering steam: green hydrogen for energy-intensive industries
Projects: GRINHY, GRINHY2.0, MULTIPLHY
Using solid oxide electrolysers, hydrogen can be produced from water at high temperatures, which helps to boost the efficiency of the process in settings where waste heat is available. Research fostered by the FCH JU is scaling up this technology to the capacities required to help decarbonise hard-to-abate industrial processes, with work on the world’s first demonstrator of a system in the multi-MW class under way.
Green syngas for a greener future
Green syngas from steam and carbon dioxide, by way of co-electrolysis powered from renewables, is the aim of a project backed by the FCH JU which has brought this promising technology closer to commercialisation. Syngas has many uses, notably as an energy carrier that can be transformed into resources such as synthetic natural gas or biofuel. Producing it sustainably could therefore significantly advance decarbonisation.
High-quality hydrogen, cost-effectively produced
Projects: HYCORA, HYDRAITE, HYGRID, MEMPHYS
Fuel cell technology requires pure, high-quality hydrogen, at a manageable price. The FCH JU is supporting research and innovation to resolve the underlying cost-vs-quality challenge and thereby improve the technology’s commercial viability. The key achievements include optimised international standards on hydrogen quality, novel purification technologies and Europe’s first hydrogen testing facilities.
Essential education for a skilled FCH society
Projects: FCHGO, NET-TOOLS, TEACHY2020
Without a suitably qualified workforce, Europe will not be able to harness the full potential of the latest FCH technology. According to estimates, opportunities for tens of thousands more researchers, engineers and other workers are expected to be opened up by 2030. Education and training projects funded by the FCH JU are helping to foster the necessary expertise in this burgeoning sector.
Mass fuel-cell production INLINE for a boost
Can Europe produce enough fuel cells to meet market demand, at affordable prices? Research and innovation backed by the FCH JU is helping to advance fuel cell manufacturing and quality control. One of the projects funded in this area has designed a large-volume, flexible production line for high-quality proton-exchange fuel cells, the most common type of fuel cell.

The FCH JU Best Outreach Award celebrates public engagement of our projects and aims to encourage researchers to better communicate about their activity and the progress achieved. We value innovative, but also throughly planned approaches to communication. The winner of the Best Outreach Award is chosen internally by the FCH JU Programme Office.
